Motor Vehicle Valuation Process
The Alamance County Tax Department values registered motor vehicles based on the State-adopted TEC DataSystems valuation manual. While this manual is generally reliable and closely aligns with other resources such as Kelley Blue Book and NADA, there may be discrepancies.
If you believe the valuation provided by the TEC DataSystems manual is inaccurate, we encourage you to reach out to our office to discuss your concerns.

Taxpayer Appeal Rights and Assistance
As a taxpayer, you have the right to appeal the assessed value of your property with the County. Our dedicated staff is available to assist you throughout the appeal process, ensuring your concerns are addressed efficiently.
Required Documents for Filing an Appeal
To initiate your appeal, you must submit a completed appeal form along with supporting documentation. The following documents are typically required:
- Mileage – A recent service report showing mileage (in and out) or a copy of your vehicle’s inspection report for renewal purposes.
- Damages – A repair estimate detailing the damages to the vehicle and the estimated repair costs.
- Bill of Sale – An original, dated copy of the bill of sale reflecting the vehicle’s original purchase price.
We are committed to ensuring that your appeal is handled fairly and promptly.
How to Submit an Appeal
Personal Property Appeal Form
Once you submit your completed appeal form, our Tax Department staff will review the provided documentation and may adjust the vehicle’s valuation. Adjustments may be made based on factors such as:
- Loss of value due to incurred damages
- High mileage
- Inaccurate depreciation from the original purchase price
Please note that the purchase price should reflect the actual amount paid for the vehicle, excluding trade-ins, dealer fees, or promotional discounts.
To help facilitate an accurate review, we encourage you to provide as much detailed information and documentation as possible. Our appraiser will evaluate the materials and determine if any adjustments to the valuation are warranted.
Further Appeal Options
If you disagree with the appraiser’s determination, you can submit a written request for further review to the County’s Tax Assessor. The Tax Assessor will assess the appeal and determine if additional adjustments can be made.
Should you still be dissatisfied with the outcome, you have the option to present your appeal to the Board of Equalization and Review, which will conduct a further review of your case.
